Zirconia and Porcelain Crowns

Metal-free crowns and bridges strengthen worn, broken or heavily filled teeth.

A crown is a cap that fully covers and protects the outer surface of a tooth. Zirconia is a metal-free, strong ceramic whose translucency is close to that of a natural tooth. A bridge replaces a missing tooth using support from neighbouring teeth.

When are crowns needed?

  • Teeth weakened or broken by large fillings
  • Teeth that need strengthening after root canal treatment
  • Severely worn or discoloured teeth
  • Replacing missing teeth with a bridge

How are they made?

  1. Examination and plan: The tooth is assessed, with X-rays if needed.
  2. Preparation: The tooth is reduced slightly on all sides to make room for the crown.
  3. Impression and temporary crown: An impression or digital scan is taken; a temporary crown is fitted during the lab stage.
  4. Try-in and cementation: After checking fit, colour and bite, the crown is permanently cemented.

Including the laboratory stage, this usually takes 1–2 weeks.

Care

Crowned teeth can still decay, especially where the crown meets the gum, so this area must be cleaned well. Floss or interdental brushes and 6-monthly check-ups extend the life of the crown.

Frequently asked questions

Zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal?

Zirconia contains no metal, so it does not create a dark line at the gum margin and looks more natural. The right material depends on the tooth's position and biting forces.

Does it hurt?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic. Mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is possible.
